Scope of Bitumen

Bitumen is widely used in construction of flexible pavements. Bitumen is the byproduct of petroleum. Due to its property of viscosity and ductility, the product is very useful for pavements. Ordinary bitumen if used then cracks are formed after use. In order to increase the strength and non cracking property of the bitumen it is modified by adding some other material.

Crumb rubber modified bitumen (CRMB) is one example. In this rubber particles are mixed in certain proportion. These rubber particles provide non cracking property to the bituminous layer such as wearing coat. Other materials may also be searched to mix with bitumen to enhance the strength, durability, non cracking ability and more adhesive quality of the bitumen. This is the matter of scope of research. By changing the properties of viscosity and ductility such new type of bitumen may be produced.
